  • The first 19 members were all Metro High students, and 15 of the group went into engineering.

  • Since 1999, over 900 youths in the program

  • 300 have received engineering degrees or in an engineering program

The Pre-College Initiative (PCI) Program is a key focus of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). Its primary goal is to encourage students in grades K–12 to develop an interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Through consistent early exposure to technical competitions, academic development, and leadership training, the PCI Program aims to inspire these students to pursue careers in STEM fields12. NSBE Jr., the membership category for pre-college students and institutions officially chartered with NSBE, plays a vital role in the PCI Program. NSBE Jr. focuses on enhancing the education received by African-American and other underrepresented pre-college students in STEM to influence them to become tomorrow’s corporate executives, entrepreneurs, and leaders.

ENGINEERED TO WITHSTAND

NSBE has more than 30,000 members worldwide, with 2,000 elected leadership positions, 18 regional conferences, an annual international conference, and an annual national convention. Since its inception over fifty years ago, NSBE has grown to include approximately 310 collegiate student chapters, 99 pre-college programs, and 88 professional chapters with 6,000 technical members.  A professional staff operates NSBE's World Headquarters in Virginia.
